At the moment the user gets the generic "please enter a correct username adn password...", I think it would be better to announce that the authentication server is down.

It's really not simple as all we known is that no backend returned a user. I could try to attach a message to the globally stored HttpRequest object if I find one but if for any reason the backend is used in a request outside of the login page it could have consequences.
The only way would be to completely rewrite the django.contrib.auth.authenticate() function so that we can raise some kind of informative exceptions that would be displayed by the login page.
